On the morning of 21 April, Team Cap stars Chris Evans (Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier) and Anthony Mackie (Falcon) were in high spirits at the Southeast Asia press conference for Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, firing shots at their Team Iron Man rivals in anticipation of the blockbuster film’s Southeast Asia Blue Carpet & Premiere being held that evening at Marina Bay Sands.
“I saw what Downey did in Paris,” Chris Evans said, referring to a video posted on April 18 of Robert Downey Jr. lighting up the Eiffel Tower in Team Iron Man colours. “And Team Cap and Singapore are going to come back in a big way!”
Anthony Mackie was confident Team Cap is the tougher crew, joking that “Team Iron Man are about being pampered, they go from the press conference to the spa, from the spa to their jet.” He added that Iron Man’s suit looked like a Coca Cola can, and also compared Vision to a Magic Marker, War Machine to a trash can, and Black Panther to a Michelin car tyre.
The actors were joined on stage at Sands Expo and Convention Centre by the film’s director Joe Russo, who revealed that Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War is a must-see for fans because it culminates everything that’s preceded it in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and sets the stage for the story to follow in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, slated to be released in two parts in 2018 and 2019.
“This is long form storytelling on a scale never seen before,” Russo said. “The characters are going to end up in very complicated places.”
When asked to describe the movie in one word, Sebastian Stan chose: “Heartbreaking”. Added Chris Evans: “Record-breaking”, and Anthony Mackie: “Ass-kicking”, to laughter from the crowd.
Marvel's Captain America: Civil War is the sequel to Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). The film follows on from the events in Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and sees the Avengers split into two rival camps. Team Cap and Team Iron Man will go head-to-head in the ultimate superhero showdown, climaxing in an action-packed 17-minute airport fight sequence.
Marina Bay Sands also hosted the Southeast Asia Blue Carpet and Premiere on 21 April at the Ice Skating Rink from 6pm, where thousands of fans screamed their support as the stars and film director walked the blue carpet.
Marvel's Captain America: Civil War opens in cinemas on 28 April 2016.
