EXPLORE SECRET GALAXIES AT I LIGHT

Marina Bay Sands supports iLight at ArtScience Museum

3 - 26 March 2017

As part of i Light Marina Bay 2017, Singaporean audiovisual collective Syndicate will take over ArtScience Museum’s iconic façade from 3 to 26 March, bringing it to life with their spectacular new projection-mapping artwork, Secret Galaxies.

Part of ArtScience Museum’s Art and Science of Space season, this new site-specific commission transforms the exterior of the museum into a dynamic representation of the stars and planets above us. In creating Secret Galaxies, Syndicate took inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman mythology. In classical antiquity, the sacred Seven Luminaries are the seven most visible objects visible in the sky: the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

The artwork uses imagery of the seven classical celestial spheres, and the corresponding qualities that these are perceived to embody. The classical planetary system is contrasted by a set of data visualizations from contemporary astronomy. The striking visuals and impactful soundtrack gradually blur the lines between science, art, and mythology. The artwork reminds us that how we perceive the stars is influenced by a multilayered set of cultural references and scientific theories.
