Chinatown Wet Market
Chinatown Wet Market is located in the basement of the Chinatown Complex. Here, you’ll find a whole range of fresh Asian vegetables, live seafood, spices, dried goods and tofu. It’s also a great place to see something a little more exotic — like frogs, turtles and even eels!
While you’re there, you can take the opportunity to have an authentic local meal at the Chinatown Complex Food Centre, the largest hawker centre in Singapore with over 260 stalls selling delicious Asian and international dishes.
Tekka Wet Market
Located in Little India, Tekka Complex houses Singapore’s largest indoor wet market, which means you’ll be able to find a huge range of spices, meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, and ingredients for Indian cooking. You can even buy a chilled fresh coconut to sip from while you browse the various market stalls.
The complex also has a food centre, as well as shops selling Indian clothing. Take a step outside to find a range of Indian restaurants and more gold jewellery merchants than you might ever have seen on a single street.
Tiong Bahru Wet Market
The Tiong Bahru Wet Market offers a range of local and international fresh produce. Beef from Australia and New Zealand can often be cheaper than what you’d find in the supermarket, and there's also a range of cheeses.
On the way out, pick up some beautiful and reasonably priced orchids, Singapore's national flower. While you're in the stylish Tiong Bahru neighbourhood, take some time to explore – it's a great place to hunt down independent bookstores and chic cafés.
Wet Market Tips
Yes, the smells and sounds may be overwhelming – but it’s all part of the experience. Come early as most wet markets close by around noon, and the freshest produce gets snapped up early. Most wet markets are closed on Mondays, and you’ll need to bring cash.
Many locals bring their own little trolley with them, which is a better option than carrying heavy bags. Wet markets are called ‘wet’ for a reason: the floor is constantly being hosed down. So wear covered shoes with non-slip soles.
