ENGLISH ECLECTICISM
Dawn Koh’s experimental style is every cool English girl’s dream wardrobe.

She is one half of the duo behind The Chalk Farm, which was opened in 2010 and is one of the most progressive cake companies in Singapore. She runs it with her brother Bryan, a chef and baker, whom she says inspires her craft. Dawn is a soon-to-be Le Cordon Bleu London graduate of Central Saint Martins and the London College of Fashion. She loves London’s myriad blend of fashion eccentricities.

The consummate foodie has an adventurous streak that influences her exuberant sense of style, one that includes a panoply of wide-ranging ensembles. Her hardly typical look: effortless and understated, somewhat classically crisp, with lots of surprising twists in colour and texture – not unlike the innovative sweets she co-creates for The Chalk Farm.

A Conversation with Dawn

How has London influenced your personal style?

London has taught me to be more adventurous and fun with my personal style.

Which is the one must-have wardrobe item to channel the London style, and how do you wear it?

A trench! You can wear it effortlessly with most clothes and still look stylish. I usually wear it over blue jeans and a white tee.

Who do you think are the fashion designers/labels that best represent London style, and why?

Burberry because it is an iconic British brand. It is enduring and at the same time modern. Celine because of the collection’s silhouette; the brand is easy to wear, comfortable and stylish.

The most stylish neighbourhood in London is...

Shoreditch. People from Shoreditch have their own unique sense of style and the styles are unpredictable. It is a place where you can check out and shop at many vintage boutiques and record shops, and chill out at cafes.

Which places – cultural, recreational, hotel, retail, F&B – in London best capture the city’s style and are always on your itinerary whenever you visit?

1. St John Bread and Wine – This restaurant is one of my favourite haunts in London. The food is simple, fresh and extremely flavourful. What I love is that the menu changes daily between lunch and dinner.
2. Floris – This family-owned store is the oldest English retailer of fragrances and toiletries.
3. Fortnum & Mason – Each time I visit, it feels just like Christmas! Imagine a treasure trove filled with sweets, tea, coffee and hampers!

What are your must-have fashion items for Fall/Winter 2016?

Embellished guitar straps for bags! They are incredible as they transform the look of a bag and give the bag a new look. Hoodies are a must-have for Fall/Winter 16. They have a nice casual look, but you can also dress them up by teaming them with a nice evening clutch or a pair of heels or boots. Velvet is a key fabric this season – it has a luxurious feel and is perfect for Fall/Winter 16.
