CLIMATE RESPONSE

Decouple carbon footprint from business growth by reducing reliance on fossil fuels, adopting smart technology and driving more effective use of materials

POWERING OUR OPERATIONS WITH SOLAR ENERGY FROM LOCAL ROOFTOP ARRAYS

To lower our carbon footprint, we invested in 64,000 local Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) between 2019 and 2021, with a commitment to purchase another 36,000 in 2022. RECs are issued when one MWh of electricity is generated and delivered to the electricity grid from a renewable energy source. Our REC sources include various solar rooftop projects across Singapore, from Housing & Development Board building rooftops and NEWater plants to engineering facilities.

WATER STEWARDSHIP

Optimise operational efficiency and raise awareness of water issues

CHANGING WATER CONSUMPTION BEHAVIOUR AND INSPIRING AN APPRECIATION FOR WATER ECOSYSTEMS

In 2021, we partnered with three of our signature restaurants to reduce water consumption in their cleaning processes. Through a multi-pronged approach of upgrading equipment and tools, Team Member education, and driving accountability by regularly sharing consumption data via a customised dashboard, the three restaurants saw an average reduction in water consumption of 14.2%

RECYCLING & CIRCULARITY

Embrace 3R and circularity principles to enhance our waste management systems and maximise resources

ENHANCING CIRCULARITY WITH RECYCLED PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES

In 2021, we transitioned to recycled PET (rPET) water bottles – made from bottles collected and recycled in nearby Malaysia – across virtually the entire integrated resort, demonstrating a low carbon footprint. The change stemmed from extensive analysis with a thought leader and material engineer to determine that rPET is the most sustainable choice in Singapore at present, beyond reusable serviceware.

SOCIAL IMPACT

Leveraging our unique resources and active team member volunteerism to help meet Singapore’s social needs

At Marina Bay Sands, Team Member volunteerism and philanthropic investments are the cornerstone of our work inspiring change through our community engagement programme, Sands Cares. We focus our work on the following priority areas to have the most meaningful social impact for Singapore:

  • Investing in solutions to create resiliency for the vulnerable.
  • Advancing learning and mentorship opportunities to remove barriers and build the workforce of the future.
  • Promoting and preserving culture and heritage.
  • Disaster response and preparedness

In 2021, our Team Members volunteered 8,300 hours – since the integrated resort’s opening in 2010, they have contributed over 80,000 hours to good causes.

SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Delivering diverse and delectable choices that emphasise our commitment to sustainable, local, healthy and exciting cuisines

SUPPORTING SINGAPORE’S ‘30 BY 30’ GOAL

In support of Singapore’s ’30 by 30’ food security goal to produce 30% of its nutritional needs by 2030, we set up a second edible garden at Sands Expo and Convention Centre in 2021. With over 30 different types of herbs, vegetables, fruit trees and climbers, we are able to serve guests fresh, tasty produce while avoiding carbon emissions from transport and contributing to food resiliency.

CULTURE & CAPACITY BUILDING

Communicating our commitments across both operations and the supply chain by inspiring and engaging our customers, partners and Team Members

PARTNERING WITH THE FOOD BANK SINGAPORE TO BENEFIT LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Since 2013, Marina Bay Sands has worked closely with local food charities like The Food Bank Singapore and Food from the Heart to build a strong culture of rescuing food to support communities in need. We specially invested in 2 industrial blast chillers in 2015 to quickly freeze leftover catered food to ensure food safety and freshness.
