MARVEL STUDIOS' CAPTAIN MARVEL FAN EVENT: HERE'S WHAT YOU MISSED

Brie Larson

Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but for thousands of Captain Marvel fans ’round Asia, 14 February, 2019 marked a momentous occasion beyond the celebration of love.

That was thanks to a stellar showing from the star-studded cast and directors of Captain Marvel, who walked the gold, red and blue carpet  – conspicuously set in the film's theme colours – at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Marina Bay Sands for an exclusive fan event; the only stop in Asia.

In tow were actors Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Gemma Chan (Minn-Erva), and Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck – of which Academy Award winner Larson earned the most cheers. The honour was well-deserved, given it marks the first female-led role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The running theme for the event was also marked with an empowering video celebrating Singapore-based, inspiring female figures – each rightly superheroes in their fields of work, from Paralympic gold medallist Yip Pin Xiu to race-car driver Claire Jedrek.

Fans from as far as Japan, Korea, Australia and the Philippines showed their love with handmade costumes – some of which were toiled over for up to a week – and dangled artworks and declarations of adoration for the stars in hopes of snagging a selfie or autograph.

Throughout, hosts Nikki Muller and Bobby Tonelli entertained with quizzes and rallied the crowd for the quintessential, Singapore-styled Kallang Wave.

But the event wasn’t simply a snazzy, jazzed-up celebration for the cast and directors of Captain Marvel; as part of Sands for Singapore, Marina Bay Sands’ CSR programme, ten youth from various beneficiaries under AWWA were honoured onstage as agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and awarded certificates by Jackson.

The mini ceremony was also led by Marina Bay Sands’ President and Chief Executive Officer George Tanasijevich, and Tom Batchelor, Vice President of Studio, Live Entertainment and Music at The Walt Disney Company South Asia.

With Captain Marvel slated to premiere in cinemas in Singapore on 7 March, 2019, it seems there’s only one way the Marvel cinematic universe can go: Higher, Further, Faster.
