An Insider’s Guide to Philipp Plein

German designer Philipp Plein is synonymous with flash and bling, and regularly hogs the headlines for his elaborate, extravagant fashion shows. The German designer, who recently brought his brand of fashion to Singapore with the opening of his eponymous duplex boutique at Marina Bay Sands, has stuck to his unfettered design ethos for 20 years, which commands a cult-like following around the world. Here are some fascinating facts about the man and his creations.

Early Beginnings

Plein was actually working as a lawyer when he made his first foray into the world of design, crafting dog beds. He then turned his attention to furniture, bags and accessories, and sold crystal-embellished leather jackets at trade shows. He launched his luxury ready-to-wear label in 2008, and staged his first fashion show in 2010 during Milan Fashion Week.

The Clothes

It’s all about leather, sequins and crystals. The designs are edgy and daring—think bedazzled, graphics-driven tees, sweats, jeans, blazers, belts and everything in between. Plein draws his inspiration from icons in music and popular culture, with Michael Jackson, Scarface and Dynasty serving as muses for his recent collections. If you’ve the cash to splash and are one for opulence and flash, Plein’s designs just might be the thing to tickle your sensibilities.

Party Central

Plein’s fashion shows boast elaborate set-ups that cost millions of dollars (think roller coasters and monster trucks steamrolling cars), and regularly feature celebrities taking to the runway to model his creations. Big names who have walked the runway, performed or taken front-row seats at his shows include Mickey Rourke, Madonna, Courtney Love, Kylie Jenner, Nicki Minaj, Paris Hilton and Coco Rocha.

Philipp Plein International Group acquired Italian menswear brand Billionaire in 2016, and today manages the Philipp Plein, Plein Sport, Plein Junior and Billionaire Couture labels.
