Flights of Fancy: Journey to Wonderland

The book that fuelled many a youngster’s imagination, Alice in Wonderland, comes to spectacular life at ArtScience Museum at a special exhibition celebrating the pinafore-clad heroine. Wonderland puts you into the shoes of our intrepid adventurer as you navigate oversized furniture, tiny doorways and thought-provoking riddles. Here are just some of the ways Wonderland will amaze you.

1. It is a treasure trove of trivia

Since her first appearance in print in 1865, Alice and her adventures have also been portrayed in over 40 films and 30 television programmes for over a century. Wonderland presents a wide selection of original behind-the-scenes material, including over 300 artefacts and objects such as first-edition tomes, drawings, original costumes, films, magic lantern projectors, animation and puppetry so you’ll see her universe in a whole new light.

2. You’ll actually get involved

This immersive exhibition encourages guests to become curiouser and curiouser, with each visitor’s bespoke Lost Map of Wonderland becoming their passport to this magical world of whimsy. Acting as one of four map characters—  the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat or the Queen—you walk your path and uncover more stories along the way. Placing your map on various plates around the exhibition reveals yet another layer to the show and uncovers even more surprises. The whole experience feels like a treasure hunt come to life, with all its twists, turns and little reveals.

3. That famous Tea Party comes to life

Cutting-edge digital projections and music reimagine the classic Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in a sequence that is not to be missed. Seated at the large dining table in a white room, you’ll witness empty plates and cups slowly transform into a full, hearty repast, set against a magically transforming background. It is a veritable audio-visual feast for the senses.

Wonderland is on until 22 Sept at ArtScience Museum.
