CHRISTMAS IN THE TROPICS: TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO

Spread the yuletide joy and bring a little cheer; Christmas is looming, it’s almost here. Never mind that the festive season on this side of Earth comes with humidity and rain aplenty – these (mostly indoor) must-dos will inject a little magic into your life, and are perfect for couples and families.
CUT

Feast like royalty with these buffet spreads

Christmas is a season of giving, but we say it’s perfectly fine to let loose a little and indulge in some of the best festive-themed buffets and menus in the city. We’re talking butterscotch apple crumble and New York sirloin with half lobster at CUT by Wolfgang Puck; roasted turkey and baby abalones in plum sauce at RISE; and a tasting menu built around this season’s prized truffles at Waku Ghin, which holds two Michelin stars. Or dine with views of the city – from 57 floors up, specifically – at LAVO Italian Restaurant & Rooftop over grilled black cod with Portobello mushrooms, among other specials.

Corporal Crumble

Catch a festive musical

Tumble down the rabbit hole that is Corporal Crumble’s Christmas Crisis (Dec 1 & 2), a family-friendly pantomime featuring a hapless heroine whose mission to win over the so-named Christmas Star is thwarted by bumbling villains – including the most-dreaded King Rat. Then there’s Hi-5 SUPERS (Dec 7 & 8) for the little ones, and Faith & Freedom: The Music of George Michael (Dec 14 & 15), a tribute to the late Wham! frontman.

Christmas Display

Admire Christmas light displays ’round Marina Bay

Deck the shops with boughs of holly – or, wait, we mean Christmas garlands adorned with fairy lights and shiny baubles strung across almost every floor of The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. Snap a photo with a Christmas tree close to the Event Plaza, or venture past Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer to the walkway skirting the Waterfront Promenade. Here, you’ll find some 30 ‘adopted’ ChariTrees (until Dec 26); ones that have been adopted by companies to raise funds for financially disadvantaged youths.

Spectra

Roll up for Spectra, the free light-and-water spectacular

As night claims day, the city awakens. Partygoers descend on the decks of CÉ LA VI and LAVO, skyscrapers illuminate warmly-lit streets, and tourists throng the Event Plaza fronting the Waterfront Promenade for Spectra. The free nightly light-and-water display takes you through Singapore’s journey as a multicultural society in 15 minutes, led by jets, lasers and colourful projections on a wall of water. Have your cameras at the ready for this.

Spectra, Sun-Thu 8pm & 9pm; Fri & Sat 8pm, 9pm & 10pm. Free.

Future world

Revel in the magic of teamLab’s (interactive) digital art

Future World: Where Art Meets Science, daily 10am-7pm; last admission 6pm. Hourly session slots. $14-$19.

Digital Light Canvas

Jonesing for more? Located beside hawker concept Rasapura Masters is Digital Light Canvas, a centrepiece whose 20-metre-high sculpture is fitted with over 400,000 lights. Paint calligraphic art with your feet, or admire shoals of fish racing beneath you as you dart across the LED-lit space.

Digital Light Canvas, Sun-Thu 11.30am-9pm; Fri & Sat 11am-10pm. $5, or free with Future World: Where Art Meets Science ticket.
