Beyond Singapore's modern skyscrapers, humongous shopping malls and famous tourist attractions, there are a few unexpected gems worth visiting during your next quick getaway or long-haul vacation to the sunny island.

You've done it all – posed with the Merlion, seen the Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay, and visited Chinatown – what’s next? This itinerary of lesser-known places will take you off the beaten track and spice up your travel plans. While these places might be a normal sight for locals, they are certainly an unusual experience for curious tourists. Get ready to be obsessed with Singapore all over again with these three unique recommendations.

Tekka Market in Singapore

Start your morning at Tekka Market

Located in the heart of Little India, Tekka Market and Food Centre is the perfect setting to indulge in authentic local delights and test your bargaining skills with store vendors.

Besides the variety of cuisines offered by the food stalls, Tekka Market is also known for its dry goods, colourful fruits and meats. You'll also find a plethora of Indian ethnic wear and accessories – from vibrant saris to the traditional salwar kameez.

One of the best buys in Tekka Market is avocados, which you can hardly find in markets around Singapore. Food stalls in Tekka Market have also started serving healthier food choices that include wholegrain dishes and wholemeal prata.

If you're itching for a thrilling culinary adventure and eye-opening cultural experience, Tekka Market is a location not to be missed!

Getting to Tekka Market:

Open daily from 6:30am to 9pm (operating hours vary for food and market vendors).

Tree Top trial at MacRitchie Reservoir

Afternoon hike at MacRitchie Reservoir

After chowing down breakfast at Tekka Market, take a stroll along the iconic Treetop Walk. Situated in the middle of MacRitchie Reservoir, getting to the Treetop Walk requires visitors to embark on a 6-kilometre hike. Be sure to pack adequate drinking water and a copious supply of sunscreen!

As you venture into this nature wonderland, don't be surprised when you spot unusual wildlife and exotic plants. Expect animals of all kinds, from adorable Plantain Squirrels scurrying around to lazy Monitor Lizards cruising by. But be wary when you encounter the playful Long-Tailed Macaques – though they are harmless by nature, we'd recommend keeping your distance and to avoid bringing food on your hike. Keep an eye out for flying snakes – well, sort of – the Twin-barred Tree Snakes have been known to glide from tree to tree.

Nature trails are the best way to embrace nature and appreciate wilderness up close and personal – outdoor enthusiasts should also check out these nature tours in Singapore.
