Milan fashion designer Franco Moschino’s career began in 1971 when he became an illustrator for Gianni Versace. From 1977 to 1982 he designed for the Italian label Cadette before founding the Moschino label in 1983, at first designing casualwear and jeans, but eventually expanding into lingerie, eveningwear, shoes, menswear and perfumes.
Moschino and his fashion label quickly became famous for his innovative, colourful, and often eccentric designs. From the collared shirt to the evening gown, Moschino’s inimitable strength is in taking elegant wardrobe classics and reimagining them with daring shades, pop culture motifs, and a whimsical sense of irony and play.
Some of Moschino's early unusual creations included a quilted black denim miniskirt with plastic fried eggs decorating the hemline, a quilted jacket decorated with bottle tops, plug-socket drop earrings, and bodices made out of safety pins. "Expensive Jacket" was embroidered in gold across the back of a cashmere jacket, and "Bull Chic" on a matador-styled outfit.
Following Franco Moschino’s death in 1994, Rossella Jardini, his assistant since 1981, became creative director of the brand, responsible for keeping the stylistic and philosophical approach of Franco Moschino alive. In 2013, Jeremy Scott became Moschino's creative director, staying true to the brand's playful spirit with his designs featuring tongue-in-cheek slogans, fast-food inspired motifs and bold color combinations.
In 2006, Moschino designed the outfits for the opening ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Moschino also designed outfits for Kylie Minogue's 2005 Showgirl - The Greatest Hits Tour, Madonna's 2008 Sticky & Sweet Tour and six outfits for Lady Gaga for her The Born This Way Ball in 2011-2012. Other celebrities to wear Moschino clothes include Michele Obama, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
