Transforming Waste Into Renewable Fuel

Approximately 100,000 litres of used cooking oil annually is transformed into sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel

Pursuing luxury with purpose, Marina Bay Sands has advanced its environmental commitment as the first Asian hospitality organisation to establish a closed loop in renewable fuel, reimagining everyday waste as a powerful source of low-carbon energy.

Approximately 100,000 litres of used cooking oil from Marina Bay Sands’ kitchens are diverted annually, transformed into sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel in partnership with Neste, one of the world’s largest refineries for sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel production.

Used cooking oil is poured into oil drums and transported to Neste, transformed, and given a second lease of life in back-up generators back at Marina Bay Sands

Twice a week, used cooking oil from Marina Bay Sands’ kitchens is collected and stored in dedicated containers before being transported to Neste’s refinery in Singapore. It is then processed alongside other waste streams and residues, processed into high-quality fuel, free from sulphur, oxygen and aromatic compounds. Once refined, the diesel is procured back for operational use to power the property's back-up generators, lowering carbon emissions from this fuel type by 11 per cent.

This initiative is one of the many ways Marina Bay Sands breathes new life into waste, reinforcing its dedication in minimising environmental impact while operating at world-class standards. The transformation of used cooking oil into renewable fuel goes beyond an operational milestone – it sets a new benchmark for responsible luxury and world-class hospitality.
