Mitigation of Shock (Singapore Edition), an installation created by London-based design studio Superflux for 2219: Futures Imagined, is an invitation to experience the lived consequences of global warming at a human scale. This speculative apartment transports visitors to a Singaporean HDB flat in the mid-21st century – where home is now a microcosm of multiple species cohabiting and thriving – to investigate climate change and its consequences on food security at a human scale.
Listen in as Superflux founders Anab Jain and Jon Ardern talk about how they use narrative and speculation to explore complex problems that are often discussed in terms of data and abstract projections, and why hope often works best alongside tools for proactively tackling future challenges.
Superflux are a team of designers, futurists, and filmmakers led by Anab Jain and Jon Adern. Superflux create worlds, stories and tools that provoke and inspire us to engage with the precarity of our rapidly changing world. They imagine and prototype different possible futures, to help people make better decisions today.
About Feeling the Future:
Feeling the Future is an online programme of talks that examines the human capacity to imagine new futures in a world where uncertainty and anxiety is prevalent. As we navigate extraordinary realities, this online series of talks engages with prominent thought leaders and futures thinkers on topical issues – ranging from emotional courage and mental wellness to social resilience and ethics – to reflect on where we are and where we could be heading.
2219: Futures Imagined explores the possible futures of Singapore 200 years from now through a series of immersive installations, meditative spaces, films, paintings and sculptures. Inspired by the work of Singaporean writer and poet Alvin Pang, the exhibition is neither a utopian or dystopian view of the distant future and instead focuses on small, human-scale acts of innovation and contemplation. 2219: Futures Imagined intends for visitors to reflect on what kind of future they want for Singapore, and what actions they may be prepared to take in order to bring that future into being.
