2024 Exhibitions and Programmes Line-Up

2024 marks the Year of Extraordinary Women at ArtScience Museum. 

 

We are proud to present three major shows that examine, celebrate, and uncover the stories of women whose lives have influenced society throughout the decades. The exhibitions range from focusing on inspiring artists and screen legends to strong female characters seen in the epic movies of one of the most beloved animation studios in the world. Accompanying the exhibitions are women-focused programmes throughout the year, starting with a season of screenings of work by influential Chinese artist Cao Fei at ArtScience Cinema in January.

    • Technotopias: A Cao Fei Multiverse

      19 – 28 Jan

       

      In tandem with New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed and inaugurating the Year of Extraordinary Women, ArtScience Cinema brings into focus the profound artistry of Chinese contemporary artist Cao Fei, whose visionary work often examines technology’s effects on humanity. From Asia One to La Town and her latest sci-fi epic Nova, Cao’s multiverse is an invitation to delight in the ordinary while offering a more harmonious future.

    • Free Screenings: Golden Age of Hollywood

      1 – 29 May

       

      Experience rare screenings featuring Anna May Wong, the first female Chinese American movie star, showcasing her resilience and trailblazing legacy. Explore her iconic performances in Piccadilly and My China Film/ Bold Journey, along with animated interviews of Hollywood luminaries, Bette Davis, Grace Kelly and Marlene Dietrich. Delve into their stories of breaking stereotypes and striving for more in the film industry.

       

      This programme screenings are in conjunction with the exhibition Goddess: Brave. Bold. Beautiful.

    • Screen Icons: Shu Qi

      13 Apr – 26 May

       

      Screen Icons celebrates the transcendent, leading lady performances in Asian cinema. The first in the series: Taiwanese arthouse and box-office star Shu Qi.

       

      Shu Qi’s diverse career spans nearly three decades, establishing her as one of the most prominent actresses in Chinese cinema. She garnered critical acclaim with Millennium Mambo in 2001 directed by acclaimed Taiwanese director, Hou Hsiao-Hsien. 

       

      This programme is in conjunction with the exhibition, Goddess: Brave. Bold. Beautiful.

    • Exhibition Focus: Everything Everywhere All at Once

      12 – 25 May 

       

      Michelle Yeoh makes Oscar history with her award-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, screening as part of Goddess: Brave. Bold. Beautiful. 

       

      A big-hearted sci-fi adventure with unforgettable action sequences, Everything Everywhere All at Once is about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who discovers that she’s the only one who can save the multiverse from a surprising and familial foe.

       

      This film is referenced in the exhibition Goddess: Brave. Bold. Beautiful.
