What does it mean to live in relation with a place, a landscape, a material or another living being?

Marking the opening of More than Human, In Relation invites audiences into the exhibition for an evening of talks by artists, designers and practitioners whose work explores ways of living and making beyond a human-centred perspective.

The programme unfolds within the galleries, bringing audiences into close encounters with the works and practices that shaped them. Across two sessions, the conversations explore how place shapes our relationships with the world around us, and how practices of attention, observation and making can reveal connections that often go unnoticed.

In Relation invites us to look more closely at the environments we inhabit and the many forms of life, knowledge and agency with which we share them. Come listen and linger with the exhibition, and consider what new ways of seeing might emerge when we understand ourselves as part of a larger living world.

How might our understanding of place change when we recognise it as a web of relationships between people, materials, histories and other forms of life?

Places are never simply backdrops to human activity. They are shaped by histories, cultural practices, built environments and the many forms of life that inhabit them. This session brings these relationships into focus through works in More than Human and perspectives from architecture, urbanism, cultural memory and ecological research.

The conversation will unfold among the artworks to consider how our surroundings shape what we make, how we live and whose experiences inform the places we create. It will also turn towards Singapore and Southeast Asia, where dense urban environments, changing coastlines and layered cultural histories offer particular ways of thinking about our interdependence with the living world.

7.15pm – 7.30pm Break

How might paying closer attention change the way we encounter the world?

What we notice—and what escapes our attention—shapes how we understand the world around us. This session explores attention as a creative and ecological practice, bringing together artists whose work engages with ecological systems, material experimentation and alternative forms of knowledge.

Through their approaches to observation, listening and making, the speakers consider what might become possible when we attend to the world on its own terms, rather than seeing it only through the lens of human needs and experience. Moving between artworks in the galleries, audiences are invited to slow down, look more closely and consider how different ways of sensing and knowing might change our understanding of the more-than-human world.
