ArtScience Interlude: Lynn Loo

About Leaving and Arriving

"I was attracted by the Isaburo train journey that runs between Kumamoto and Hitoyoshi because it passes through a landscape of multiple mountains. I took a return ride on this line and shot on a 16mm film camera going in and out of the tunnels."

Inspired by the historic train rides from the now-defunct Tanjong Pagar Railway Station in Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, experimental filmmaker Lynn Loo started a series of ‘movement’ films that capture states of stasis and flux. With a Bolex 16mm camera, she first recorded the window reflection of the cabin’s interior and exterior as the train moved through tunnels and landscapes, later superimposing these scenes on top of each other to create a series of repeated images on two sides of the same screen.
