ArtScience Interlude: Hilmi Johandi

A stop-motion ‘collage’ video, Two Minutes of Island Paradise (Sun Set to Rise) n.2 is composed of images borrowed from tourist advertisements, postcards and travel documentary clips of Singapore produced in the 1980s and 90s.

Experimenting with mixed media, artist Hilmi Johandi suffuses his painterly style with found footage of leisure and attractions in Singapore, layering figures and familiar landscapes to highlight constructed representations of paradise.

In this iteration presented in ArtScience Museum against the wider backdrop of the Marina Bay skyline, the work becomes a meeting point between past and future; a hazy, tropical interlude as visitors reflect on existing historical narratives.

About the Artist

Hilmi Johandi (b. 1987, Singapore) works primarily with painting and explores interventions with new media that are associated within the domain of framing, fragmentation (deconstruction) and compression (reconstruction). His explorations are set in the range of the familiar and symbolic motifs perceived in the context of Singapore. He composes and synthesises images from film, archival footages and photographs into a fragmented montage that hints at the social effects of rapid development, and the personal desires and contempt of those who embrace modernisation.

Hilmi is a recipient of NAC Arts Scholarship (Postgraduate) 2017, LASALLE Scholarship 2017 and the Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award. His solo exhibitions include “Landscapes and Paradise: Poolscapes”, Ota Fine Arts, Tokyo (2021), “Stagecraft: Landscapes and Paradise”, Ota Fine Arts, Singapore (2019) , “Painting Archives”, Rumah Lukis, Kuala Lumpur (2019), “An Exposition”, President’s Young Talents 2018 Exhibition, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore (2018), “Dusk to Dawn | Fajar ke Senja”, Galerie Steph | OCBC Art Space, Singapore. He also participated in group exhibitions such as “Singapore Deviation: Wander with Art Through the Rail Corridor”, Rail Corridor, Singapore, "Inside the Wild Cube", Progressive Disintegrations, Singapore (2022), “Art Way ASEAN Way”, Art Mill Songkhla Art Center, Songkhla (2017).
