Into the Ocean: Journey Beneath is a collaboration between ArtScience Museum and OceanX, making its world premiere this June. It invites visitors on a descent through the depths of the sea, from the sunlit surface waters to the darkest reaches of the ocean.
Conceived as an “emersive” experience, the exhibition positions visitors as active participants in a journey beneath the waves, taking them into the ocean’s shifting environments before resurfacing with new understanding. At the heart of the exhibition is extraordinary footage captured by OceanX, a leading ocean exploration and media organisation whose work has featured in major international documentaries including Blue Planet II by the BBC and the recent OceanXplorers series produced with National Geographic.
Using advanced submersibles capable of filming at all depths of the ocean, OceanX has documented environments that remain largely unseen. Much of the footage presented in the exhibition has never been shown publicly before. Vast, intimate, and precise, these cinematic scenes form the backbone of the exhibition, transforming scientific exploration into a powerful visual encounter with the ocean’s beauty and fragility.
As visitors descend through the ocean’s zones, from the visible, life‑rich surface to the deepest reaches of the sea, OceanX’s footage is placed in dialogue with contemporary artworks and scientific specimens. The exhibition features works by internationally renowned artists such as Marshmallow Laser Feast, Marco Barotti, Jana Winderen, Robertina Šebjanič, Lachlan Turczan, Sissel Tolaas, Ong Kian Peng and bit.studio, alongside regional scientific research such as National University of Singapore’s long-term coral reef studies. Together, these perspectives illuminate the ocean as a dynamic, interconnected system that sustains life on Earth.
The exhibition extends beyond experience and education by engaging visitors in interactive activities that connect directly to marine conservation work. In doing so, Into the Ocean: Journey Beneath builds a living bridge between the gallery and the ocean itself, inviting participation in real‑world environmental action beyond the museum.
The exhibition makes the world beneath the waves accessible, emotionally resonant, and unforgettable. It inspires an oceanic worldview that reimagines our relationship with the planet and the future of the seas that sustain it.
OceanX is a nonprofit working to unlock the ocean’s sustainable potential. Through a dual focus on science and education, we’re building a new paradigm where humanity and the ocean mutually thrive. Our approach is fueled by exploration, leveraging advanced research, multimedia educational programs, cross-sector partnerships, and advanced technology to help transform how people understand and value the ocean. Our work strives to fortify biodiversity and increase the sustainable use of ocean resources to help ensure the ocean remains a foundation for human wellbeing and potential.
