Home is where the Health is

Lockdown life during the Covid-19 pandemic has been quite a challenge, to say the least. As people responsibly practise social distancing and retreat to their homes to self-isolate, the seclusion from family and friends and the shutdown of everyday interactions with our environment can affect our feelings. With each change in the restrictions, it puts into focus a reminder that we're all trying to adapt to new norms and adjust old habits.

These unpredictable changes to our lifestyles are frustrating and can take a toll on our mental and physical wellbeing. However, with a positive mindset and some helpful #MBSATHOME tips, we hope to make maintaining your health just that little bit easier and enjoyable.

Keep calm and meditate on

"In these uncertain and unprecedented times" is a phrase we've all heard far too often over the last year and a half. Truly, the pandemic has caused a lot of ambiguity, resulting in feelings of stress and restlessness. With these concerns, it's essential to find the time to take a moment and allow yourself to relax and give your mind a break from the internal noise of your thoughts.

One way to achieve this is through meditation. The practice of mediation has been around for thousands of years, and when done right, is a highly useful way to settle your mind that provides a sense of calm and balance that can benefit both your emotional health and wellbeing. These themes and more are explored further in Art of Being Calm, one of a series of new programmes that make up the ArtScience at Home online event.

With a focus on the ABCs of finding serenity, Art of Being Calm combines insightful discussions and engaging activities to demonstrate how the mindful practise of meditation and art can help us all to find and nurture inner peace.

Spiritually switched on - The ABCs of Mighty Meditating

The experience begins with Museum Ambassador Josephine and her meditative guide to Finding Peace and Staying Calm. In this video presentation, Josephine gives a brief overview of the origins of meditation before sharing different techniques you can try, including Mantra meditation, Visualisation and Compassion. Each one focuses on a slightly different element and approach but offers simple ways to tap into your spirituality.

ArtScience Museum ABCs of Colours

Your True Colours - The ABCs of Colours

What goes through your mind when you see the colour blue? What's your reaction to a splash of purple or a burst of green? Well, beyond hinting towards your personal artistic tastes, colours can also reveal the nature of our moods and emotions. Rooted in centuries of biological, psychological, and cultural influences, colours have the power to do everything from making you happy to making you hungry.

In Being Bold with Colours, colour theory expert Radhiah examines the deeper relationship between colours and our feelings. Radhiah breaks down three different categories that colours tend to resonate most. 'Universal,' which is reflective of a common meaning that everybody associates with a particular colour; 'Cultural' which is connected to the different rituals and traditions a specific culture considers essential; and 'Personal,' preferential colours you might select to convey a message or meaning.

The episode also encourages you to engage your inner artist and create colourful mood pieces to still your mind and focus your being with a step-by-step Spill Art tutorial.

There is more to meditation and mindfulness than meets the third-eye. Art of Being Calm is full of exciting ideas and can kickstart your journey into finding out how you can harness your spirituality and bring some healing to your health. If you're looking for other ways to spark some feel-good joy and learn about new topics, the ArtScience Museum has several exhibitions happening throughout the year.

Reading a book

Book Some 'You' Time

One of the few positives of being stuck at home is the unexpected benefit of having more time to discover new hobbies and rekindle old pasttimes. For some, a good book is a great way to pass the time and a chance to delve into exciting new worlds and learn about new topics. Here are our picks for must-read books and how they can improve your wellbeing.

21 Lessons for the 21st Century

With his highly acclaimed books, Sapiens and Homo Deus, historian, professor, and author Yuval Noah Harari has explored the origins of humanity and civilization and where we might be heading in the future. In 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, Noah Harari ponders and proposes questions on everything from education and justice to work and religion. It provdes a grand and ambitious view on the world as it is today, along with a final chapter that looks at the role of mediation as a gateway towards clarity and compassion as we seek the true meaning of life. 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is brimming with intriguing ideas to nourish your mind and spirit.

Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art

According to science journalist and author James Nestor, 90% of people do not know how to breathe correctly. That is, most people breathe through their mouths instead of their noses. In his quest to discover the science and evolution of life's fundamental action, Nestor meets and speaks to a cast of scientists and historians and learns how we breathe can affect our lives in ways that we never really knew. It's these nuggets of intriguing details and thread-pulling curiosities that make this book endlessly fascinating.
